How to Understand Dress Lengths

At Mac Duggal, all of our dresses list a shoulder-to-hem measurement to help you choose the right length for your body and occasion. This guide explains what that measurement means, how to measure yourself at home, and how to shop confidently based on dress length.

What is "Shoulder to Hem" Dress Length?

Chart showing dress lengths from highest point of shoulder to hem with models wearing various black dresses.

“Shoulder to hem” is the measurement from the top of your shoulder (where a bra strap would sit) straight down to the bottom of the dress hem. All dress lengths listed on macduggal.com are based on this method.

The models shown in the image below are approximately 5'9" tall. Depending on your height, the same dress may fall slightly higher or lower than shown.

How to Measure Yourself at Home

Follow these easy steps to determine the right length for you:

  1. Wear the shoes you plan to pair with your dress.
  2. Stand in front of a mirror with a flexible measuring tape.
  3. Place the tape at the top of your shoulder.
  4. Drop the tape straight down to where you’d like the dress to end.

For example, a 34"–38" dress will typically fall above the knee (mini), while a 56"–61" gown will reach the ankle or floor. Compare your measurement to the product detail listed on each dress page for a better idea of how it will fall on you.

Shop by Dress Length

When you're not sure where to start, shopping by length can help narrow things down based on how you want the dress to fall, and what kind of event you're dressing for.Whether you're going for something playful, polished, or dramatic, here's how to find your ideal fit.

Mini Dresses, ranging from 34 to 38 inches, are the go-to choice when you're after something flirty, fun, and above-the-knee. Perfect for cocktail parties, date nights, or summer celebrations, these shorter styles add a playful edge to your wardrobe.

If you’re leaning toward elegance with a touch of versatility, midi and tea-length dresses, typically between 43 and 52 inches, offer the best of both worlds. Falling at or just below the knee, or grazing mid-calf, these dresses work beautifully for daytime events, garden weddings, or semi-formal occasions.

For a statement-making look, nothing compares to a full-length gown. Evening gowns, which range from 54 to 61 inches, are designed to sweep the floor and command attention. These long silhouettes are perfect for black-tie events, galas, formal weddings and moments that call for a dramatic entrance.
